As someone who has let the creative side of my brain take the lead, I'm always surprised when I hear people say things like "I wish I was creative," or "I don't have any talents."
The reason why this confuses me is that it's a crock of shit! We all have creative talents and the ability to be creative. Unfortunately, some of us never take the time to explore their creative side which translates into this unfounded belief.
To most people, being creative is equal to being a Mozart or Picasso so they count themselves out before they even made an attempt at being creative. The reason Mozart and Picasso are so famous is that they realized they had a creative vision to share, and they shared it with confidence.
When I talk to people who have this belief, they usually have an inkling of something they enjoy or have a talent for, but they don't have the confidence to really dive in.
Expressing yourself creatively simply means being true to yourself and showing off the unique individual you are in a way that feels good to you. Creative expression is such a broad term. It can be dancing, illustrating, writing, or even things like decorating your home or stand-up comedy!
Sadly, what people don't realize is that by ignoring this part of themselves they're actually robbing themselves of the incredible benefits being creative can offer.
So if you're one of the people out there who have been silencing that part of yourself, here are just some of the amazing benefits that creative expression can bring into your life.
Being creative allows you to be your most authentic self. When you let go and simply allow yourself to create, you are getting to know yourself on a deeper level and becoming more comfortable with your individuality. This will overflow into your day-to-day life and how you present yourself to the world.
Not only that, but when you are being creative you are in control. This is the ultimate freedom. Expressing yourself creatively will give you a sense of power and pride that can't be gained any other way.
Creativity brings peace of mind. It's just like meditation. It's the perfect outlet for whatever emotion you're feeling. Happiness, frustration, love, sadness... the whole gamut! Once you are more in tune with yourself creatively you'll find that the little stressors don't bother you as much.
Developing Your Analytical Mind
Creativity is like a muscle. The more you use it the stronger it becomes. Flexing your creative muscles doesn't just benefit you in an artistic sense. It also helps you develop better problem-solving skills that can be used in other areas of your life like work, finances, and general decision making. Soon you will be able to create solutions for problems that used to cause stress.
Living in the Moment
When you're being creative you're in flow; Meaning you're not aware of time or anything else. Just like a child can get lost playing for hours on end, you'll get lost in your imagination and your only focus is enjoying what you're doing at the moment.
The more you engage in this state of flow the more ingrained it will become in your life, and eventually, it can help shift your entire mindset.
One of the best perks of finding your creative niche is the fact that you'll discover a worldwide community of other people just like you. Maybe your thing is embroidery or writing comics. There are communities for everything! And luckily, in the age of the Internet, it's easier than ever to connect with people who share your passion and love what you're doing.
So don't let your hidden talents go to waste. Even if you don't share it with anyone else, at least take the time to express your creativity for your own benefit.
